Welcome to Wheatridge Presbyterian Church

The name Presbyterian comes from the New Testament Greek word presbuteros meaning “elder” and refers to the practice of choosing leaders and advisors from spiritually mature and wise members to lead and direct the congregation’s ministry. The body of elders elected to govern a particular congregation is called a session. Through ordination they are officially set apart for service. Women and men are elected by the congregation to seek to discover and represent the will of Christ as they govern. Together with ministers of the Word and Sacrament, they exercise leadership, government, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a particular church. The Session is divided into a number of committees that fulfill the ministry of the church.

Congregational Care

The Shepherding Team is a group of dedicated people who regularly make home visits or calls to members of the congregation who are homebound. They also make hospital and care home visits, provide transportation to the doctor or for lab tests, deliver flowers, take communion, bring in a meal or deliver prayer shawls.

The Shawl Ministry is a “journey of opening our heart and mind to God and God’s pull on our life.” Shawls are knitted by several members of the church and delivered to the homebound. The homebound need not be members of the church.

Involvement Committee

This committee is responsible for planning many social events for the congregation and the community. Field trips include adventures in arts and cultural activities.

Membership Development

This committee’s focus is to increase church membership by creating a positive church image in the community and publicizing the church appropriately. An invitation to the community is always extended for ongoing activities and special contact is made for seasonal activities. Retention of members is addressed by home visits, calls and cards to determine if there are needs unknown to the congregation.

Mission Committee

We have several funded and supported missions such as the Equal Exchange where members sell products to provide fair prices to farmers to supplement their income between harvests

Another on-going mission of our church, in collaboration with the Westminster Presbyterian Church, is to provide comfortable, affordable, safe and pleasant homes for seniors. Members of our church, along with Westminster Presbyterian Church have a priority for apartments as they become available.

In addition to our financial support to the Denver Presbytery United Missions, we provide support to local organizations, including:

  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Jeffco Action Center
  • Uplift International
  • Lost and Found
  • Women’s Bean Project
  • Friendship Bridge

Property Commission

The buildings and grounds are in care of the dedicated members of the Property Commission. They oversee the operations and maintenance of the Wheatridge Presbyterian Church. All facets of facility maintenance from construction to lawn mowing to snow removal require the scheduling and prioritizing of capital investments and routine maintenance.

Worship

The Worship Committee supports the pastor in the planning and leading of Sunday worship and special services during the year. Adult and youth choirs, ensembles, and musicians form an integral part of leading the congregation in worship. The Altar Guild assists with the set up of the sanctuary for worship.

Deacons

Following the example of the early church, members of the congregation are elected and ordained as deacons to provide a ministry of sympathy and service after the example of Christ. The Board of Deacons ministers to people who are in need, sick, or grieving. Deacons also assist in worship and support the fellowship activities of the congregation.
